OSCE Assessment for Internationally Qualified Nurses (IQNs)
This module provides an overview of the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) implemented by the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ) for internationally qualified nurses seeking registration in New Zealand.
What is the OSCE?
The OSCE is a standardized assessment tool designed to evaluate your clinical skills, critical thinking, and ability to perform nursing tasks safely and effectively in a simulated healthcare environment. It complements the written theoretical examination and ensures you possess the necessary clinical competencies to practice as a registered nurse in New Zealand.
Who needs to take the OSCE?
All internationally qualified nurses (IQNs) applying for registration with the NCNZ are required to pass the OSCE.
What to expect in the OSCE:
- The OSCE is a three-hour in-person examination held at an accredited center in Christchurch, New Zealand.
- The exam consists of multiple stations, each simulating a real-life clinical scenario.
- At each station, you will be assessed on your ability to perform specific nursing tasks, communicate effectively with patients and caregivers, and demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- The NCNZ provides a detailed blueprint outlining the skills and knowledge assessed in the OSCE.
Moodle Resources:
This Moodle page will provide you with additional resources to support your OSCE preparation, including:
- Information and assessment booklet on the NCNZ OSCE
- Links to relevant websites and practice materials
- Discussion forum to connect with other IQNs preparing for the OSCE (optional)
By familiarizing yourself with the OSCE format, preparing thoroughly, and developing your clinical skills, you can increase your confidence and success rate in this important assessment.
